| BIRMINGHAM TAKEAWAY CHOSEN TO APPEAR AT BIRMINGHAM TASTE FESTIVAL | |
A Birmingham takeaway established just eight months ago by two school friends has been chosen to appear alongside some of Midland’s finest chefs and restaurants at this year’s Taste of Birmingham food festival.
The Great British Eatery, based at the city’s leisure venue Broadway Plaza, will serve up its signature British themed dishes alongside prestigious restaurants including Simpsons and Purnell’s at the event at Cannon Hill Park from July 9-12.
It’s the first time a takeaway has been chosen to appear at the festival and founders Conrad Brunton and Andrew Insley said they are delighted with the invitation.
“We’re so chuffed because it’s such a fantastic opportunity for us to show off our dishes to the regions’ food lovers while working alongside some of the region’s finest restaurants,” Conrad said.
Dishes they intend to serve at the festival include fish cake with lemon vinaigrette dressing, rocket leaves and tartar sauce, fish and chips cooked in beef dripping and Cornish ice cream.
Organised by Marketing Birmingham with support from Heart of England Fine Foods (HEFF), Taste of Birmingham showcase the best of the Midland’s culinary offering.
Neil Rami, Chief Executive at Marketing Birmingham, said: “We are working closely with restaurants and chefs in the city and throughout the Midlands to ensure Taste of Birmingham showcases the region’s growing culinary talents. Great British Eatery forms part of this varied and successful offering.”
Louise Pickford from (HEFF) added: “The festival will give visitors a real flavour of the excellent produce from Birmingham and the surrounding Shire counties. We will showcase quality local food cooked by some of the region’s best chefs.”
Conrad and Andy set up the Great British Eatery just last August after spotting a niche in the market for good fish and chips. In February they were awarded top marks for the dish in the Seafish Fryers Quality awards.
The takeaway also specialises in other British classics including bangers and mash, roasted chicken with onion gravy, homemade cottage pie and Cornish ice cream.
