Birmingham’s Great British Eatery (GBE) restaurant has made it into the top ten restaurants shortlisted for the coveted title of National Fish & Chip Shop of the Year 2009.
GBE, based at the city’s premiere leisure and entertainment venue Broadway Plaza, has beaten off competition from around 90 fish and chip shops around the country to make it into the final of the prestigious awards, which takes place in London in January.
The restaurant will represent the entire Midlands region, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.
GBE owners Conrad Brunton and Andrew Insley said that the news really proved that their restaurant was the best plaice to eat in the city.
“We are absolutely delighted that we have got this far and so proud that our fish and chips are among the best in the country. We can’t wait for the final.”
Nikki Hawkins, competition judge and project manager for the competition at Seafish, said: “The standard of entrants continues to increase each year and we are witnessing fish and chips shops paying an increasing amount of attention to sustainable sourcing as well as offering quality, value and choice. This industry has come a long way in 22 years and competition for the national title only gets fiercer each year.”
The Great British Eatery was set up just last August by Conrad and Andrew who are old school pals, after agreeing that they couldn’t find any decent fish and chips in the city.
The restaurant has since gone from strength to strength, employing five members of staff and selling out all their food at the recent Taste of Birmingham food festival. 27/11/2009
